Shaun is humbled in being selected as a finalist in the 2009 Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Awards with his entry the “Clockroach”.

Shauns reason for producing such a creation is two fold.

Cockroachs captured his imagination not just for their rather alien look but also for their share resilience and adaptability.

In researching his subject Shaun discovered that some species of cockroach could survive without oxygen for 45minutes. Live without food for a month or more. Are 15 times more resistant to the effects radiation than humans and can acquire enough sustenance from the glue on the back of a postage stamp to support life.

It was for these reasons that Shaun decided to look at the cockroach from a whole new perspective.

What if these were not living creatures but mechanised creations not subject to the laws of life.

The second part of the equation was simply time. These creatures seem to have been around since the beginning of time hence the significance of the clock element in the work.

Shaun has also incorporated a sense of irony in combining an analogue type watch escapement with a digital clock.

The “Clockroach” is a fun piece designed to fire the imagination.
